About The Beacon

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving the poor and homeless in Houston and Harris County, Texas. Located in downtown Houston at 1212 Prairie St. at the corner of La Branch. We provide essential services like meals, showers, and laundry to homeless individuals who are active in their recovery.  Additionally we also serve as the central intake point for all services at the John S. Dunn Outreach Center including the Cathedral Clinic, Compass, Beacon Law, and the Way Home Program.  Volunteer help are always needed!

Our Hours Of Operations

The Beacon Day Center is open 5 days a week. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Volunteer At The Beacon

85% of everything we do at The Beacon is driven by those who help us.  We need YOUR help to serve Houston’s homeless. The Beacon welcomes company group volunteer groups as well as individual and families to help. 

Qualifications to Volunteer at The Beacon: Age sixteen (16) or older.  Young adults ages thirteen (13),  fourteen (14 ), and  fifteen (15)  may volunteer with an adult guardian.  Due to safety concerns and liability reasons, no children under the age of thirteen (13) are permitted to volunteer.  Those who are interested in volunteering must be enthusiastic, have a willingness to serve others, and the ability to offer a warm smile to those is need.

We’re proud to work with our groups. Corporate, civic, social, student, and religious groups are encouraged to bring in teams of 6 – 12 people. This is for a volunteer experience that cannot be duplicated. You can schedule online or contact us to discuss details.

Shift times are: 7:15 AM – 10:30 AM | 10:45 AM – 2:00 PM (Thursday – Monday)
