New Home For Houston’s Most Talented High School Kids

As a new resident of Downtown Houston – no more daily commute from Cypress for me! – I frequently walk around my new neighborhood in wonderment almost everyday. The future development and investment in downtown the past few years is staggering. There are enough construction cranes to rival even the Dubai skyline. Today walking down Rusk, past one of the many construction sites, my curiosity just couldn’t take it any more. What is this behemoth of a footprint at the intersection of Rusk and Austin going to be? This site – the one taking up an entire prime city block – could THIS be the new home of the High School of Performing and Visual Arts coming to the neighborhood? Indeed it is.

A Bit About HSPVA

For those who aren’t familiar with High School of Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, this school isn’t just any school. It is our southern version of “Fame.” (If you don’t know 80’s TV, you’re going to have to look that one up.) Only 750 lucky students who will earn a spot in this school come 2018 when their doors open. It will position these kids within a stone’s throw of the Houston Symphony, the Houston Ballet, the Alley Theater and the Houston Grand Opera, just to name a few of Houston’s premiere entertainment spots. To say this $80 million + investment alone is significant to the future of Downtown Houston is an understatement. Nightclubs for the over 21 scene may come and go as fickle tastes change. But schools? They stay.

As these talented students and their families become occupants of the neighborhood, personally, I can’t wait to see the retail scene and businesses that will pop up over the next year or two. In fact, maybe I might open a shop myself! To see what the Houston Independent School District has planned, go to:
